Skin Tags: What Are Skin They and How Are They Treated?

Skin tags are small, benign growths that appear on the skin. Though harmless, they may become an aesthetic concern or a physical annoyance for some individuals. Read on to explore the cause of skin tags and whether or not removal is an appropriate option for you.

Skin Tags: What Are They and How Are They Treated?

Acrochordons, better known as “skin tags,” are a common condition, experienced by nearly 50% of the world’s population. These small growths can form anywhere on the body, and appear as flesh-colored protrusions from the skin’s surface. Though harmless, skin tags are typically seen as a concern due to their appearance. In this article, we’ll delve into what exactly skin tags are, what causes them, how they can be treated, and whether there are ways to prevent them from developing.

What Causes Skin Tags?

Skin tags are considered non-cancerous growths of the skin; they are made up of collagen fibers, blood vessels, and (sometimes) fat cells. These develop when the body creates extra layers of cells over the outer skin surface, known as the epidermis. A few factors which could contribute to the growth of these extra skin cells include:

Friction: Skin tags often occur in areas where the skin rubs against itself or clothing, such as the neck, underarms, groin, and under the breasts. This constant friction and irritation may lead to the formation of skin tags over time.

Hormones: Changes in hormone levels, such as during pregnancy or in individuals with conditions like insulin resistance or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), may increase the likelihood of developing skin tags.

Genetics: There may be a genetic predisposition to developing skin tags, as they often run in families.

Treatment Options for Skin Tags

Skin tags range from a few millimeters to about a centimeter (around the size of a pushpin or thumbtack) and, as previously mentioned, pose no serious health concerns. However, should an individual be troubled by the physical appearance of a skin tag, there are several different options available for removal.

The at home-solution would be topical treatments, such as over-the-counter creams and lotions. Though these products claim to be effective, it is always best to seek first the advice of a trained medical professional, such as a dermatologist. Common methods used by experts, include:

Cutting: A healthcare provider can shave or cut off skin tags with sterile scissors or a scalpel after numbing the area with a local anesthetic.

Freezing (Cryosurgery): In cryosurgery, liquid nitrogen is applied to the skin tag to freeze it off, causing it to fall off within a few days to a week.

Electrocauterization: Electrocautery is a quick procedure that removes small skin growths and areas of damaged skin. This method uses electrical current to apply heat to tissue in order remove the skin tag.

Skin Tag Prevention and Professional Advice

Due to the causes of skin tags being largely out of an individual’s scope of control, it can be quite difficult to stop these growths entirely. But don’t be discouraged! There are some precautions one can take in order to minimize their occurrence.

Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity and being overweight can increase the likelihood of skin tags, so maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise may help.

Avoid tight clothing: Wearing loose-fitting clothing can reduce friction and irritation on the skin, particularly in areas prone to skin tags.

Keep skin folds dry and clean: Moisture and friction in skin folds can contribute to skin tag formation, so keeping these areas dry and clean can be beneficial.

If skin tags are an insecurity you face, keep in mind that they are largely unnoticeable and beauty is usually found in the things that make us unique! Nevertheless, if you are experiencing concerns or wish to proceed with removal, treatment options are available. We advise seeking the advice of a trained medical professional to help you decide on the best course of action for you.
